A Level Mathematics

Year 12

In Year 12 students study pure, mechanics and statistics.

Each student is required to have a Casio FX991ex ClassWiz calculator which is available from the online school shop. Much of the GCSE course is presumed knowledge for the A level course and is all accessible from MyMaths. The areas that students need to make sure they are especially competent with are:

  • Pythagoras
  • Expressions and formulae
  • Trigonometry
  • Straight line graphs
  • Algebraic manipulation
  • Solving equations 

Year 13

In Year 13 students study pure, mechanics and statistics again, building on the foundations learnt in Year 12.

Assessment information

  • Throughout both years there are end of topic tests every few weeks.
  • In June of Year 12, students sit internal exams; AS papers for the course code H630. UCAS predictions are based on these exams.
  • In January of Year 13, the students sit mock exams for all of the pure maths content.
  • In April of Year 13, the students sit mock exams for all of the statistics and mechanics content.
  • In June students take the H640 external examinations which is three papers; Pure and Mechanics, Pure and Statistics and Pure and Comprehension.

A Level Further Mathematics

The A level Further Mathematics course studied is the OCR MEI course, code H645.

All students study Maths and Further Maths and will gain two A Levels.

In Year 12, students study all of the content of AS Maths and then AS Further Maths.

In Year 13, students study the rest of the content for A Level Maths and then the rest of the content for Further Maths.

The content is mostly Pure Maths with three additional modules in Mechanics, Statistics and Modelling with Algorithms.

Assessment information

  • In June of Year 12, the students sit internal exams; AS papers for the course codes H630 and H635. UCAS predictions are based on these exams.
  • In January of Year 13, the students sit mock exams for all of the pure maths content of A Level maths and the statistics and mechanics of A Level Further Maths.
  • In April of Year 13, the students sit mock exams for all of the statistics and mechanics content of A Level Maths and the pure and algorithms content for A Level Further Maths.
  • In June of Year 13, students take the H640 and H645 external examinations. These consist of:

Three papers for Maths; Pure and Mechanics, Pure and Statistics and Pure and Comprehension.

Four papers for Further Maths; Further Pure, Mechanics, Statistics and Algorithms.
