Russian

The study of Russian is an enjoyable and increasingly rare experience, Calday Grange Grammar School is one of a small number of schools in England which still offers Russian at both GCSE and A Level. To take Russian to GCSE level is to gain a qualification which would stand out on any university application form. It offers students the chance not only to learn about one of the leading Eastern European languages, but also to discover more about the culture of one of the most fascinating countries in the world. This is the nation, after all, that was described by Winston Churchill as "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma"; we endeavour to help our students unravel some of the mysteries of Russia and the Russian language.

The take-up of Russian is impressive (we have around 150 students studying the language) and our success is recognised nationally: for the past 6 years our department has been awarded the Good School Guide Award for the best results in Russian; in Boys’ schools in England at GCSE and A Level. We have a wide range of extra-curricular activities to enrich learning.

KEY STAGE 3

Students are provided with specially designed support booklets with all necessary vocabulary and grammar points. In addition, Year 7 students are issued with phonetic vocab sheets to encourage and aid parental input and support.  Students in Key Stage 3 are always welcome to attend the Russian booster classes or be part of the mentoring programme.

GCSE

The aims of the GCSE Russian course are similar to those of the other modern foreign languages. Students will continue to develop their oral, written and comprehension skills leading to GCSE which will equip students with the skills to interact in a variety of meaningful and relevant situations. The assessment is based on the skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening and will also include translation skills, both from and into Russian. From year 9 the students are offered to go on our annual Russian trip (Moscow and St.Petersburg) as well as a host of various extra-curricular activities and field trips, such as the theatre, Russian circus, ballet and watching Russian football teams play at Anfield and Goodison Park.
